Take an inventory of which logins depend on your SIM card

Guides · 2026-09-30

SIM swap fraud, where a criminal convinces a mobile operator to move your number to their card, works because so many services treat a phone number as proof of identity. If your exchange account, the email behind it and your password manager all accept text-message codes, one successful swap can unlock all of them. Most people have never counted how many of their logins depend on the number. A simple inventory makes the exposure visible and shows what to change first. This guide explains how to build that inventory for accounts on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget and the services around them, and how to reduce reliance on the number.

List everything tied to the number

Write down each exchange account, the email accounts registered with them, your password manager and your main banking apps. For each, note whether the phone number is used for login codes, for account recovery or only for notifications. Be thorough: old accounts and secondary email addresses often still rely on the number without you remembering.

Find the chains

Look for chains where one weakness leads to another. For example, if the email behind an exchange account can be reset by text message, the exchange is only as safe as your number. Mark these chains clearly on the inventory, because breaking them gives the largest security improvement for the least effort.

Reduce the dependence

Where possible, replace text-message codes with an authenticator app or passkey, starting with email accounts and exchanges. Write backup keys on paper and keep them private. Ask your mobile operator whether it offers extra protection for SIM changes, such as a port-out PIN. Keep the number on file for notifications if you wish, but avoid it as the only factor anywhere it matters.

Know the warning signs

If your phone suddenly loses service without explanation, treat it as a possible SIM swap. Contact your operator from another phone, then sign in to your email and exchanges from a trusted device and check sessions and recent activity. Use only official recovery steps. Update the inventory after each change and review it every few months.
